Social Change
Using the power of dance to create lasting positive change in communities across the North East.
Transforming Lives Through Dance
At North East Dance, we believe that dance is one of the most powerful tools for social transformation. Our programmes reach into communities facing significant challenges — areas of high deprivation, schools with vulnerable young people, care settings with isolated older adults — and use the universal language of movement to create connection, build confidence, and inspire change.
Our work addresses real social issues: physical inactivity, social isolation, low self-esteem, anti-social behaviour, and limited access to arts and culture. Through carefully designed programmes, we give people the skills, confidence, and motivation to make positive changes in their lives.
Dance Belongs to Everyone
This is more than a slogan — it's the principle that guides everything we do. Regardless of age, ability, background, or experience, everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of dance. We actively work to remove barriers to participation, whether those barriers are financial, physical, geographical, or social.
Inclusion is at the heart of our practice. Our DanceAbility programme serves participants with limited mobility. Our early years programmes welcome children from age 2. Our Jive Alive programme brings dance to older adults in care settings. Our alternative curriculum programme supports young people who have been excluded from mainstream education.
We don't believe in one-size-fits-all. Every programme is adapted to meet the needs of its participants, ensuring that everyone can take part fully and feel valued. Our dance educators are trained to work with diverse groups and to create safe, supportive environments where people can express themselves freely.
The impact of this inclusive approach extends far beyond the dance studio. Participants report improved mental health, stronger social connections, greater physical fitness, and a renewed sense of purpose. For many, our programmes are a lifeline — a place where they feel seen, heard, and celebrated.
