DanceAbility
A community learning and engagement programme for people who have learning difficulties, or who have limited mobility or a disability. The programme is designed to meet the needs of individuals who may not be able to access mainstream provision or have difficulties with learning, and embracing exercise through conventional methods. Adapting dance and fitness programmes to be relevant to specific needs, is a key factor in engaging the process of learning. We feel it is very important to recognise that participants will come to the learning encounter as an ‘active partner ‘ in the learning process.
Our aim is to enable individuals to engage in creative dance and movement, and to learn new skills which develops their own artistic and creative abilities as well as improving their health, wellbeing, and happiness. The programmes are designed to raise awareness of diversity and disability, which helps to promote acceptance and understanding of others. Through dance sessions, individuals are taking part in positive activities, which promotes social inclusion, and in turn, leads to stronger community cohesion. Participants are given the opportunity to access and enjoy physical activities in a safe and stimulating environment, where their contributions and ideas are recognised and valued.
